Although these two images focus on different subject matter, and are taken at different times of day we are able to see a lot of similarities between the two. What are some of those similarities?
Are either of these images inspirational to you? Have you ever had the chance to photograph an image like either of these? Can you think of a location that would lead to a composition such as these?

1.) Evaluate the following imagery in terms of Composition, Value, lighting, and Subject Matter.
AlFred Stieglitz’s Icy Night is a photo taken of a road lined with trees, with streetlamps behind it. It was taken during the winter at night. Lighting is done by the streetlamps behind the road. Icy Night is a darker based photo than Barns and Clouds. Minor White’s Barns and Clouds is a photograph of a barn sitting on a hill with clouds behind it. It was taken during the day in the summertime and used the sun to light the photograph.
2.) What are some of those similarities?
The photos are similar in that they are both done in black and white, done of the common beauty around us (e.g. the barn, the road lined with trees) and both are of mainly landscape and nature.
3.) Are either of these images inspirational to you?
Both photographs are inspirational to me in that I should simply look at the beautiful world around me for my subject matter and that more often than not, nature makes for the best subject matter.
4.) Have you ever had the chance to photograph an image like either of these? Can you think of a location that would lead to a composition such as these?
I could photograph an image like either of these while staying at my dad’s or my grandma’s house, both of while were built surrounded by nature. A location that could lead to a composition such as these would be anywhere in nature to be honest, as how both of these photographs were taken in nature.
AlFred Stieglitz-Icy night
ReplyDeleteThis image is a very good composition, the lighting seems to be the basic theme along with the trees. The subject is the trees in rowsfollowing down the path,a great picture. I think the picture has greatly captured the theme icy night. Just looking at this picture if enough to make you feel or imagine cold. this is a very inspirational photograph, think the best out of the two.
Minor White-Barn and Clouds
This image has great value and a great compositon. The horizon is dropped down to the bottom of the photograph. Subject seems to be the barn, along with the clouds. The lighting seems to be coming mainly from the left of the photograph. This is also a inspirational photograph,I've had chances to take some photos as these i have taken them. A location for images such as these would be in a empty dark old town, and in a valley top of a hill. These photos have some similarities such as light is mainly coming from the left and photograph subject is centered. has a inteesting background behind both images that catches your eyes.

Icy Night:
This photograph has a great composition, the line of the trees draws the eye through out the photograph. By just looking at the photograph you can feel the icy chilling tempature throught the night sky. The lighting provides a highlight of the trees.
Minor White:
This photograph has a great composition because the object(the barn) is offcentered and the clouds draw your eyes across the photograph. And the horizon is lowered so that you see more of the sky. You can tell that this photograph was taken during the summertime because of the ighting in te background.
Simiarites:
Both of the photographs are in black and white, and have great composition. There both nature related.
Are any of these images inspirational to you?:
Yes, they both inspire me to look more closey around me, the simpilest thing can make the best photograph.
Have you ever had a chance to photograph an image like either of these? can you think of a location that would lead you to a compostion like these?:
I have not but if i got up on my hill behind my house im sure i can. Because its all woods nature and wildlife its really beautiful.
1) Icy Night: The lighting of this photograph is dark but is dimmed by the many lampposts in the photograph. The photograph was taken during a winter’s night. The subject matter is the road with the trees marking the path on each side creating good composition making the viewers eye follow the road.
ReplyDeleteMinor White: The subject of this photograph is the small shed like building. The subject is slightly off centered to the right creating composition. The horizon is lowered to see more of the sky and clouds. The picture was taken during midday do to the lighting coming from the left side of the photograph.
2) The similarities of these photographs are that they cause the viewer’s eye to travel among the photograph. In Icy Night the trees cause this and in Minor White the clouds cause this. Both of these photographs are taken in black and white.
3) Icy Night is very inspirational to me. This is because it gives the viewer both an eerie feeling and a beautiful feeling at the same time. I haven’t had a chance to photograph something like this but I will one day. Really any location at night could give these feelings to viewers. But one particular would be just down my street.

1)Icy Night: The compostition of this photograph it really good becuase the subject matter of the road and the trees. The trees in the photgrah draw the viewer's eyes across the whole photo. The lighting is dark but given light by the lampposts. You can tell by looking at this photo that is it an icy cold night.
Minor White: This photo has really good composition too because the barn is offcentered and it uses the rule of thirds. The lighting in this photo looks to be like it was taken in the middle of the day. The subject matter in this photo would be the barn and the clouds above the barn.
2)The similarties in these photographs are that they are both done in black and white. They both cause the viewer's eye to travel across the whole photograph.
3)Yes, these photographs inspire me to look at things that I see everyday and just walk by.
I haven't had the chance to photgraph something like this but would like to someday. A place that you could capture something like this could be anywhere outside during the day or night. You could take a photograph of anything that you would normally walk by any other day.

A) Evaluate the following imagery in terms of composition, value, lighting, and subject matter.
AlFred Stieglitz - Icy Night: I think the composition here is very good. I like how the main focus is on the trees and the path but at the same time, the viewers eyes are caught in the background as well. I really like how the street lights light up the trees. I think it's a great photo, considering it was taken at night.
Minor White - Barn and Clouds: The main focus in this picture is the barn. It's very simple but yet has so much meaning behind it. The hill and clouds emphasize how small the barn is and how big the world is. The lighting is great, it makes everything stand out. There's nothing in this photo that doesn't catch your eye.
B) Are there any similarities?
While the main focus is in the center of the photo, both have an interesting background as well that draws your eyes to that area. Both photos are lighted well; Icy Night lighted by the street lights, and Minor White lighted by the sun.
C) Are either of these images inspirational to you?
My favorite photo is Icy Night by AlFred Stieglitz because I love the whole idea of it. It speaks to me more just by the lighting because it's saying you can take any lighting and get a great picture and a great angle out of it. Overall, I think this brings a lot more excitement.
D) Have you ever had the chance to photograph an image like either of these?
I always go to Chillicothe during the weekends or travel through towns, night and day. I have had planty of opportunities to photograph something like Icy Night.
With the second photograph, Minor White, I always have a chance to photograph something like this because I live on a hill surrounded by woods.
E) Icy Night - To take a picture with a composition like this, I could go near the alleys that are lighted by streetlights and have bushes and/or trees near it or I could go near a park with traffic lights nearby.
Minor White - I live on a hill so everywhere I look, I can take a photo similar to this. Or I could go somewhere like my pastors house. He lives out in the country on a horse farm, so I could get some great photos there.

1.)Evaluate the following imagery in terms of Composition, Value, lighting, and Subject Matter.
AlFred Stieglitz - Icy Night: Its taken at night in the winter walking though a park, the street lamps are a perfect back ground and used as the lighting in this picture. Because of the way the trees are lined it draws your eyes straight to the back of the photograph and where the trees lead you is off centered. The shadows on the path give a slightly creepy look almost like you shouldn’t go though the path. The trees over take the ground in terms of size, its in the bottom thirds, where you see more of the trees and less of the path that leads you though them, yet shows just enough to draw your eyes to the back of the photograph.
Minor White - Barn and Clouds: Its taken on a sunny day with lots of clouds in what looks like spring or summer. The barn is off centered in the picture not totally making it the whole center of the picture. The sky takes over the middle and the top thirds and the hills take over the bottom thirds. The sun is used for the light and because of the clouds it leaves shadows on the hills in the background. All the hills and the things growing all around this barn seem to give the picture texture.
2.) What are some of those similarities?
They are both done in black and white and have simple back grounds. The photographer has found real beauty in simple everyday things in life. They both have a form of lighting in the photograph. They both have shadows in the photograph.
3.) Are either of these images inspirational to you?
Both are inspirational because you look at them and they are just amazing photographs and make you see what you might miss if you don’t stop and look.
Icy Night is because it’s something as simple as walking though a park at night in the winter when everything is covered in snow and just looks amazing, the trees all around you and the street lights behind them, but until you see a picture that captures the beauty you don’t really notice it or really take the time too. With peoples busy schedules they don’t take time to notice the simple beauties in life.
Barn and Clouds is because it’s another one of simple beauty, people don’t tend to notice it until it is pointed out to them. It just makes you want to sit back and actually look for the real beauty in everyday life. And it makes me want to go out and look for scenes like that to go out a photograph.
4.) Have you ever had the chance to photograph an image like either of these? Can you think of a location that would lead to a composition such as these?
AlFred Stieglitz - I have not had a chance to photograph an image like this one. I have never seen a scene like this before in real life only in shows or pictures. But it is a completely stunning photograph.
Minor White - I have actually, but not quite as simple of a background. Out at my grandmas house there is a barn but with slightly different surroundings, there is apple trees around the barn and not fields.

Please evaluate the following imagery in terms of Composition, Value, lighting, and Subject Matter.
Icy Night- is a great composition photo. It is taken during the night where the street lights are the only thing lighting the roads that are covered by snow and ice, the roads are lined with trees that are covered by snow.
Barn and Clouds- is a great photo as well the lighting is controlled by the sun and the barn is set far away and off center.
2.What are some of those similarities?
Some of the similarities are that the lighting is cuased by natural effects and they both have strong points of interest.
3.Are either of these images inspirational to you?
Both of these photo's are inspirational because when you look at them and realize what the pictures are you are amazed. I just think it is amazing how we can just walk up and down the street and take a photo and it be the best photo anyone has every seen and all you had to do is hit a button and you wow people.
4.Have you ever had the chance to photograph an image like either of these? Can you think of a location that would lead to a composition such as these?
I have not had a chance to take a photo like any of them. the best location i can think of would be out at my grandpas house he has a barn juss like the one shown above, i just think it would really be a great picture to take if i ever got the chance.

AlFred Stieglitz Icy Night 1893 – This picture has a strong center of interest that is the snow covered road, which is off centered a little bit. The background is the city lights and they use the trees as a foreground object. The lighting is in the background with a little bit of foreground lighting on the first two trees and parts of the road.
Minor White Barn and Clouds 1955 – This picture has a strong center of interest which is the barn, which is a little off centered. The picture’s horizon is in the lower third of the picture. It has a simple background which is the sky. The foreground object is the barn. They used natural lighting in the photograph.
Some of the similarities of these two images are that they are both in black and white, they are pictures of the scenery, and they both seem to be taken during the winter or when snow is on the ground.
I would like to be able to take a picture similar to the “Barn and Clouds” image but I have never had the chance to photograph one like it. I think Central Park in New York would give a picture like the “Icy Night” photograph or in Bainbridge in the winter. I think Seip Mound would give me a good picture like the “Barn and Clouds”.
The composition in both of these photos is excellent. In “Icy Night” the trees that follow the lines of the road lead your eyes straight into the light which seems to be a major theme in both of the photos. The Composition of “Minor White is made notable by the off centered subject, the barn. The lighting is very different in the two photos in “Icy Night” it appears to be the subject. However, in “Minor White” it appears to complement the subject. These photos make you take a second look at the world around you. They both have great composition, the focus was nature, and they are black and white. These aren’t really inspirational to me but they do make me cherish the world around me that I take for granted daily. I have a couple chances that I can think of but I have never taken the opportunity. I could think of many places some as simple as my back yard.
